Grinding

So apparently I’m an editor now. Well, I guess I have been for some time, ever since I decided to publish The Big Bad (yes, edits on stories are happening, yes, the project is still going, unfortunately the real world kinda exploded for me and my co-editor earlier this year, so we’re getting things back on track, I promise). But now that I’m taking on clients it brings a whole new perspective on things. 1) I’ve said before that I’m never more an expert on a subject than when I have to teach a class on it. Well, I can […]

Merry Christmas/Kwanzaa/Hannukah/Solstice/Festivus/Anything Else I Missed

Had a pretty good Christmas here at Casa de Hartness. It was light on material stuff, in part because of finances, and in part because there just isn’t much stuff I want. Suzy, too. We’re kinda in a happy place as far as getting rid of stuff, so we’re not terribly inclined to want to bring a ton more stuff into the house. Suzy is purging years’ worth of costumes and costume racks from our lives, and I’ve been working on getting rid of excess Magic cards, books and other stuff, so the idea of bringing a bunch of crap […]

Free for the holidays – Unholy Night – a Skeeter the Monster Hunter short story

In the spirit of giving, I’m putting this up for free until after Christmas. It will also be released as an ebook for $.99 if you’d rather not read on the computer screen. This takes place soon after the events of  Final Countdown.    Unholy Night “Did I mention how much I hate Christmas carols?” I hissed into the Bluetooth earpiece. The little old lady in front of me turned around and glared at me, breaking off right in the middle of “Good King Wenceslas.” “Did I mention I don’t give a flying rat’s ass?” Came the gravelly voice in […]

Thanks

For keeping the discussion civil on my last post. I got a lot of comments from people I know, some from people I don’t know, and at least one from a guy I’ve known since elementary school! Everyone agrees that we have to do something to prevent another tragedy like what happened in Newtown. So, since we need to be the change we want to see in the world, I’m going to start doing my part to work against the glorification of the gun in my own work. I’m not sure exactly what form that’s going to take – it’s […]

Gun Control – A Modest Proposal

And this time, I don’t mean the Jonathan Swift type of modest proposal. I actually mean that I have an idea for gun control in the US. If you’re of the opinion that no one should have guns, or that everyone should be able to have any type of gun they want for whatever reason, then don’t bother reading this, because you’re just going to think that I’m an idiot, and there are already enough people with valid reasons to think I’m an idiot, so we don’t need any more. Let me start by saying that what happened in Connecticut […]

Facebooking

In the wake of the tragic events in Connecticut yesterday, my heart goes out to the parents and families of the children, teachers and school personnel that lost their lives. I’m not a parent, so I can’t imagine what it would feel like to have my heart and soul ripped out like that. But it brings a lot of emotions to the forefront, a lot of fear, a lot of anger, and a lot of helplessness. And in America, when we feel helpless, we lash out blindly at whatever is nearest, even if they’re our friends. So you’ll see a […]

Writer Services

So in my ongoing efforts to avoid getting a day job, I’m going to start offering more services to other writers here on this blog. There is a huge gap missing in the independent writing scene, and that’s developmental editing. This is the hardest type of editing, the kind that makes writers willing to give up the vast majority of their revenue to New York publishers. This is the kind of editing that every writer needs, and very few places offer. So I’m offering it. Call it book doctoring, call it developmental editing, call it comprehensive story development, whatever. Here’s […]

December – February Class and Con updates

So hey there. It’s hard to get back in the habit of blogging regularly when you’ve been the kind of slackass I have lately, but I’m working on it. Just wanted to pop by and give y’all a heads up on the classes I’ll be offering and the cons I’ll be attending in the next couple of months. All these classes are offered through Carolina Learning Connection, and you can click the linky to sign up. December 29 – Self-Promotion and Marketing for the Writer – this is how to use social media to sell yourself, how to market your […]

Alright, alright, I’ll post already

I get distracted easily. By shiny things, loud noises, Magic cards, eBay, Craigslist, Facebook, the like. Pretty much anything. And lately I’ve been distracted by looking for a job. It’s not that the writing thing isn’t working out, it’s that the writing thing isn’t working out quite well enough to support me. We’re not starving (which is evident from my waistline) or in danger of losing our house, but we’re eating through our savings a little more quickly than I’d hoped, so I’m probably re-entering the workforce. It’s not a huge deal, I have skills that people are willing to […]
