Here’s an idea – because I don’t have enough to do, I’ll publish an anthology. This year. With an exclusive short story.
Yeah, I’m not too bright. But I want to write a story about a bad vampire. You know, the kind of guy who just does what he wants and damn the consequences. No angst, just fangs. Since I want to write this story, I of course think people will want to read it. Since I think people want to read one story about a bad guy, I think they might want to read a whole anthology of stories about bad guys.
So here it comes – The Big Bad – an anthology of evil
Send me your best short story (6,000 words max, if it has to be longer contact me first) that features a bad guy or evil character as the protagonist. It can be fantasy, urban fantasy, superhero, horror, whatever. Just send me your best bad guy story. I’m taking twenty.
Email submissions to johnhartness AT gmail DOT com, as a .doc or .txt attachment. Include a brief author’s bio, please/
I’m paying $50 for one year’s exclusive electronic and print rights plus two contributor’s copies. After that we retain rights to publish electronically in the anthology only, and in print in this anthology only, but you can take it and sell it somewhere else, or sell it yourself as a standalone.
Deadline is July 31,2012.
Some people have emailed me questions – so here are some answers.
No
Yes
No
No
Maybe
Anyway, here’s a realistic response to some questions.
1) I will not start reading until the submission period closes. I have limited space and limited money to pay for stories, and I don’t want to run out of acceptances before July 31.
2) While nothing is off limits, there are things that I as an editor and publisher will not publish. I will not publish work that glorifies racism or race/gender/creed/religion/sexual-preference-based crime. You can have characters that are racist, sexist, homophobe, whatever. They are supposed to be evil. But if the tone of the piece is “INSERT CLASS OF PERSON HERE deserved it because they are a member of that class” then it probably won’t get bought for this anthology. I do not want this book to promote hate in any way. Just to celebrate and embrace the bad guy. Or question what is bad. If you think it’s over the line, let me know. If I have time, I’ll read it early and tell you if it’s over the line. Then I promise to re-read it when I’m doing my selections.
3) I will take flash pieces, but I cannot pay the full amount for flash. I will pay $20 for pieces under 2,000 words. Sorry, I have a budget. And I have a number of pages that I need to fill. That means if I take short pieces, I can’t pay as much for them.
4) No, there is not an age limit. If you can write, you can submit.
5) No, there is no need for an agent.
6) Please email any questions to me at johnhartness AT gmail DOT com. I’ll then update this FAQ and reply to you via email.

I am intrigued… I’m going to dive in, and if what I come up with turns out to be worthwhile, I’ll be back!

I like this idea and would love to be part of this! Any other details you can offer? Any time period restrictions, etc?
Now let’s see if I can whip up a nasty tale!

No time period restrictions – if it’s a good story, let it fly!

Cool—but my story will be about an evil Central Oklahoma hick gal from Pott. County who is as wicked as she is confident in her new red boots ‘n blue eye shadow. Question though: Does the story need to contain a magical realism or fantasy element? I assume the “evil one” can be a gal?
Thanks.

Love the idea…especially in light of all the wimpy vampires that don’t drink blood or act bad that have cropped up recently.
I’m just wondering, do you have any restrictions in the blood and gore and “adult” areas? How nasty can things get…of course, I don’t have to get real nasty if that’s not acceptable. Sometimes it just flows that way.
Good luck with the anthology

Are you interested in any shorter pieces? Like flash horror? Thanks,

Just sent in a story.
Not a vampire but still a bad guy.

I submitted something! It takes a less cut-and-dry stance on what it means to be a bad guy. Are you still a bad guy if you’re just following orders?

Hey John- this seems like a great opportunity, and I’d be happy to write up a short-story for this theme. I just had a few brief questions:
1) Is there a need for an agent
2) Is there an age requirement
3) Do you have a rating limit (i.e. blocks against anything graphically sexual or linguistically offensive)
I’ll see how long it will take me to write it, but if you could answer these questions quickly so I can begin, I will go right on to sketching a draft and then a final one.

This sounds great. But yes, is there an age requirement or need for an agent?

Great stuff, I have a story in my closet, no not my life story, that I am thinking of submitting. The protagonist is a mother.

Hadn’t considered that, so thanks for asking. Yes, flash contributors will get two contributors’ copies.
